The Eastern Long Island Coastal Conservation Alliance, Ltd. (E.L.I.C.C.A.), is a not-for-profit corporation, in collaboration with Stony Brook University, which has undertaken a multi-year project to study the eastern Long Island shoreline and its environs, as it exists now, and has in the past, in order to explore possible solutions to erosion problems and evaluate potential methods of beach restoration.

Coastal preservation and environmentally responsible stewardship of the coastal environment are issues that East End policymakers and residents face on a daily basis. Too frequently, well intended but potentially damaging decisions are made based upon public opinion and uninformed sources. Data are often lacking, and user groups are not kept abreast of current data and policies.

Hurricanes, while not common, are a concern for anyone living on Long Island, New York. The 1938 hurricane is the storm of record for anyone living today. This major hurricane resulted in unprecedented damage and loss of life, and today still stands as one of the worst hurricane disasters in US history. The "Hurricanes Long Island" series was developed to inform Long Islanders of their potential vulnerability and to provide information on how to prepare and respond to hurricane landfalls.
